Big Boi Discusses The Meaning Behind His Lyrics On “Lines” And “Mama Told Me”
Big Boi discusses the meaning behind his lyrics and calls himself “the Head of the Jedi Council” of rap. On Tuesday, December 11, Big Boi will be releasing his sophomore album, “Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors.”
In a recent interview with Jay-Z’s Life + Times, Big Boi explains the lyrics behind two singles from the album. Big Boi began explains “Lines,” saying that the verse is based off from his childhood experience in church. Then he explained the other single “Mama Told Me,” stating that the veteran OutKast emcee discusses his age and status in hip hop.
“I’m from Savannah, Georgia, but I represent East Point, so when I came to East Point, that was like a baptism of such, of me becoming Big Boi,” he said of the song “Lines.” “In the song, basically I said that God has my back. I firmly believe in Isaiah 54:17, “No one against me shall prosper.” We were kind of poor coming up, so going to church, we went in just our regular clothes, like t-shirts and jeans. We didn’t have nothing real fancy because it was all about going to get what they were saying at the church; it wasn’t about fashion…now that we’ve become who we are, we still are good hearted, but we’ll tear you’re ass up and we still stay fresh to death.”
Of “Mama Told Me,” he said: “Making music for me is a passion of just about making tunes that’s gonna hit you right here points to chest,” he said. “When a lot of the motivation for the younger cats is they worship money, we don’t do that. We’re doing this because this is what we love to do…I’m Head of the Jedi Council of the Jedi Rap Shit. We only get better with age and time, and we don’t age. We started when we were 16 years old, and just get wiser and wiser. As long as you’re inspired by the music, you do it.”
